“Hello From Vermont” is an exhibition and publishing project that explores the notion of contemporary Vermont art.

What is Vermont art? The purpose of “Hello From Vermont” is not to answer that question. Rather, it is to suggest that it is a question in need of an answer—that regionalism and community are essential parts of contemporary art. While many places organize and present art under a geographic banner (consider recent exhibitions of Canadian Art, Irish Art, Polish Art, etc.), in the United States, American art has come to be synonymous with art of a global elite that travels to and includes artists from New York, London, Paris, Beijing, etc. As such, while art from California or the Southwest or the Maine Seacoast is distinct and reflective of the communities from which they come, rarely are they presented as such. Through exhibition and publication, “Hello from Vermont” seeks to rekindle a sense of regionalism and awareness of a community of artmaking that defines the tradition of Vermont Art.

The 2011 edition of “Hello From Vermont” included 35 artists, 19 of which were exhibited at Galerie Maison Kasini in Montreal.

For the 2012 edition, 29 artists are being invited to participate. Examples of their work will be exhibited in the Preci Gallery at the Winooski Welcome Center during the Winooski Pop-up Gallery District from June 22nd to August 4th and at Galerie Maison Kasini in Montreal from August 8th to September 15th.

The exhibition in Winooski is made possible with the generous support of Preci Manufacturing.

A forthcoming catalog will feature all of the artists participating in this year’s edition of the project. The 2011 Hello From Vermont catalog may be purchased at the Winooski Welcome Center and online.
